Evaluate Shopify Agentic Storefronts at the product and channel level: check eligibility, data sharing and checkout location separately. Recognizable B2B-only products are excluded; mixed B2B and direct-to-consumer offers use DTC pricing. ChatGPT sends buyers to the merchant's checkout, while supported and enabled channels can complete purchases elsewhere. These differences change which buying features and measurements you need to verify.

Which products can participate?

Shopify documents Agentic Storefronts as supporting direct-to-consumer sales. When Shopify identifies products sold exclusively to business or wholesale customers, it excludes them from AI channels. Identifying signals include B2B catalogs or markets, authentication before viewing products, and private storefront access. The restriction is broader than a ban on Meta direct checkout. Shopify product eligibility guidance.

For the same product sold to both business and consumer customers, Shopify uses the DTC price; B2B pricing is not displayed through Agentic Storefronts. Custom apps or theme changes that hide prices or restrict access may not be recognized. A price hidden on your website therefore does not establish that channel distribution is correctly restricted. Custom B2B setup considerations.

Offer type Eligibility boundary Merchant check
B2B-only or wholesale-only Excluded when Shopify identifies it Confirm the product's classification and access controls
Same product sold B2B and DTC Consumer offer can use its DTC price Check the retail price, terms and fulfillment promise

One product can have several channel reviews. Each review records eligibility, sharing and the checkout route separately. The fields are a proposed merchant checklist model, not Shopify API field names. A channel review marked incomplete is a prompt to investigate, not a positive eligibility result.

For an inquiry-led business, begin with the real transaction. If an item needs engineering review, a negotiated quotation or confirmed delivery terms, do not manufacture a retail price merely to enter a consumer channel. Keep public educational content and genuine retail offers distinct. Qualified inquiries and quotation progress remain useful outcomes even when a wholesale product cannot participate.

Is Catalog access the same as AI search visibility?

No. Product-data access and open-web discovery are separate mechanisms. Disabling Catalog access does not guarantee that public pages disappear from an AI system's web search. Conversely, a public page appearing in a search result does not prove that its product qualifies for a shopping channel. Shopify also documents connected feeds for certain channels, including Google. Product discovery mechanisms.

This distinction matters when reviewing B2B controls. Check the product's sharing state and its public accessibility independently. Keep evidence such as the checked product, channel, market, timestamp and observed price. Do not infer that B2B-only products remain eligible for Catalog discovery simply because an educational page can be found online.

In Sales channels > Agentic, the managed default can enable channel access, supported direct checkout and enrollment in future channels. Manual controls let you inspect the relevant settings separately. The separate Agentic plan has a different setup boundary: direct checkout is off by default. Do not apply that exception to every eligible Shopify store. Channel management, plan distinction.

Where does the buyer complete checkout?

ChatGPT acts as a product-discovery referrer. Buyers complete the purchase on the merchant's online store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new browser tab. Shopify does not provide a ChatGPT direct-checkout toggle for this route. Your website and checkout experience remain part of the purchase journey. Selling on ChatGPT.

For Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, direct checkout can occur in the channel when supported, eligible and enabled. Availability and rollout status need checking for each store and channel. Product sharing alone does not confirm that every buyer can use that checkout route. Shopify channel overview.

Time runs downward. The alternative branches represent two successful purchase routes; both produce Shopify order records. This simplified interaction model omits API transport and fallback steps. It shows why an order need not belong to an online store session.

For Meta, direct checkout is enabled by default for eligible stores and is shown to buyers in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Check eligible products, required terms and completed store policies. Product syncing through Facebook and Instagram by Meta is an additional requirement for shoppable ads. A supported buyer country alone does not establish that every merchant entity—including a company based in China—qualifies. Meta requirements and defaults.

The useful operational record is specific: this product, this channel, this buyer market, this checkout state, checked on this date. If Admin does not expose the channel, permission or eligibility information, record the missing evidence. A platform announcement is not a substitute for your store's actual state.

Which buying features need a separate check?

Meta direct checkout does not support subscriptions, bundles, customizable products or B2B-only products. Checkout blocks are also unsupported. Google Analytics and standard or custom client-side pixels do not fire there. These limitations make a feature review necessary before treating channel checkout as equivalent to your own site. Meta feature limits.

Start with a small set of representative offers. Include a straightforward retail item and any item whose purchase depends on a subscription, configuration choice, special delivery arrangement or an account relationship. Inspect the required interaction and the information the buyer actually sees. Record unavailable functionality as a limit; do not assume your website's explanation appears inside the channel.

If direct checkout is unsuitable, assess the channel's option to send buyers to the online store. For Meta, disabling direct checkout can retain discovery while moving the purchase to the merchant site. Confirm the actual result rather than treating a saved switch as complete experience testing. Meta checkout controls.

How should you reconcile sessions, orders and profit?

Shopify's channel reporting separates sales, orders, online store sessions and online store conversion. Sales can include both referrals and direct checkout. Online store conversion uses sessions that completed checkout divided by online store sessions. These measures answer different questions and should not be merged into an improvised website conversion rate. Agentic performance reporting.

Here is a teaching example, with no customer or industry benchmark implied. Assume 50 AI-referred online store sessions, five of which complete checkout. Separately, eight orders complete inside a channel. For this example only, each of the five converting website sessions produces exactly one order.

Calculation Result What it means
5 completed-checkout sessions ÷ 50 website sessions 10% Website session conversion in this example
5 website orders + 8 channel orders 13 orders A combined order count across two routes
13 total orders ÷ 50 website sessions 26% Mismatched scope; not website session conversion

Reconcile orders using Shopify records, including payment, cancellation and refunds where relevant. Missing client-side analytics does not mean an order never happened. Keep unattributed outcomes marked unknown when the available evidence cannot identify a source; do not assign every measurement gap to an AI channel.

Then compare commercial quality. A useful internal contribution calculation is net order revenue after refunds minus product cost, payment fees, fulfillment costs and attributable channel costs. Agree how discounts, shipping income, tax and acquisition cost are treated before comparing channels. This is a proposed management calculation, not Shopify's definition of a universal profit metric.

For B2B inquiries, keep qualified opportunities and quotation progress beside channel observations. For retail, review fulfillable orders, returns and contribution. Neither catalog inclusion nor a completed checkout demonstrates incremental profit by itself.

What should a merchant verify first?

Complete three checks before expanding participation: classify the representative products; document the actual sharing and checkout state for each channel and buyer market; then reconcile one consistent reporting window by purchase route. Preserve the current settings before making any change. There is no need to alter every channel simply to perform this review.

If website session trends changed at the same time, review the reporting baseline separately. A measurement change and a change in purchase location can coexist; each needs its own evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can a B2B-only product still use Agentic Storefronts discovery?

Do not assume so. Shopify excludes identifiable B2B-only products from these AI channels. Public-web search is a separate route, and custom access controls may need additional verification. A public search result is not proof of Catalog eligibility.

Is Meta direct checkout opt-in for every Shopify store?

No. Shopify documents it as enabled by default for eligible stores. The Agentic plan has a separate default-off setup. Check the plan, eligibility and current channel state in your own Admin.

Are ChatGPT purchases completed inside a separate ChatGPT checkout?

Under the documented Shopify route, buyers use the merchant's online store checkout in an in-app browser or a new tab. That differs from supported direct checkouts inside other channels.

Can all AI channel orders be divided by website sessions?

That calculation mixes scopes when some orders complete outside the website. Use website sessions completing checkout for website conversion, and report direct-checkout orders separately when comparing the two paths.
